Weekly Report: OnIsraeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied PalestinianTerritory


Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF)Continue Attacks on Palestinian Civilians and Property inthe Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT)


- 3Palestinians, including a child, were killed by IOF.


- One of the victims was extra-judicial executed by IOF.


- 27 Palestinians, including 9 children, werewounded by IOF gunfire.


- IOF continued to shellPalestinian areas in the Gaza Strip.


- IOFconducted 46 incursions into Palestinian communities in theWest Bank.


- 84 Palestinian civilians, including 4children and 5 girls, were arrested by IOF.


- 7houses were transformed by IOF into military sites.


- IOF have continued to impose a total siege on the OPT;Qalandya checkpoint was transformed into a border crossingbetween the West Bank and Israel; IOF have continued toclosed Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing in the Gaza Strip; IOFarrested 9 Palestinian civilians, including 2 children, atcheckpoints in the West Bank; and IOF detained thePalestinian Minister of Jerusalem Affairs for several hoursat a military checkpoint.


- IOF have continued toconstruct the Annexation Wall in the West Bank; IOFcontinued the construction of the Wall in Dahiat al-Baridarea to the north of Jerusalem; IOF have isolated theal-Mawahel quarter of Beit Hanina village near Jerusalem;and IOF used forced against peaceful demonstrationsorganized in protest against the construction of the Wall.


- Israeli settlers have continued to attackPalestinian civilians and property in the OPT; a Swiss peaceactivist and two Palestinian civilians were injured; andIsraeli settlers uprooted at least 60 olive trees near"Kiryat Arba" settlement near Hebron. Summary


Israeli violations of international law continued in theOPT during the reporting period (30 March -- 5 April 2006):


Killing: During the reported period, IOF killed 3Palestinians, including a child. On Monday morning, 3 April2006, IOF extra-judicially executed Ra ed 'Ebayat, 31, theleader of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing ofthe Fatah movement, in Beit Sahour town in the West Bank. On Monday evening, IOF killed 15-year-old Mohammed Zayed,from Qalandya refugee camp south of Ramallah. They claimedthat the child had been destroying parts of the AnnexationWall in the area, but PCHR s investigations refute thisclaim, as the child was killed 500 meters away from theWall. On Tuesday, 4 April 2006, IOF killed a Palestiniancivilian in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahia,while they were shelling the area.


During thereported period, IOF continued to shell areas in the GazaStrip. They fired artillery shells at houses. IOF alsoemployed war planes to shell civilian targets. A number ofhouses and civilian facilities were damaged and 6 civilians,including two children, were injured.


During thereported period, 21 Palestinian civilians, including 6children, were wounded by the IOF gunfire.


Incursions: IOF conducted 46 military incursions intoPalestinian communities in the West Bank. During theseincursions, IOF raided houses and arrested 84 Palestiniancivilians, including 4 children and 5 girls. In addition,IOF transformed 7 others into military sites. IOF usedundercover units and trained dogs during these incursions.


Restrictions on Movement: IOF have continued toimpose a comprehensive siege on the OPT, in violation ofcivil, political, economic, social and cultural rights ofPalestinian civilians.


IOF have continued toimpose a tightened siege on the Gaza Strip, transforming itinto a large prison. IOF have continued to monitor themovement of Palestinian civilians through RafahInternational Crossing Point on the Egyptian border. Eventhough IOF allowed the transportation of food aid from Egyptinto the Gaza Strip through Kerem Shalom commercialcrossing, southeast of Rafah, the crossing has not beenofficially opened. IOF have also continued to preventPalestinian workers from the Gaza Strip from reaching theirwork places in Israel through Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing. They have continued to prevent hundreds of thousands ofPalestinians living in the Gaza Strip from traveling to theWest Bank. On 4 April 2006, IOF closed al-Mentar (Karni)commercial crossing, east of Gaza City. The Gaza Strip hassuffered from a severe economic crisis for weeks, as aresult of the closure of al-Mentar crossing.


IOFhave continued to impose a tightened siege on Palestiniancommunities in the West Bank and have imposed additionalrestrictions on the movement of Palestinian civilians in theregion. On Tuesday, 4 April 2006, IOF declared thetransformation of Qalandya checkpoint between Ramallah andJerusalem into a border crossing. Only residents ofJerusalem who have Israeli identity cards and residents ofthe West Bank who have permits to enter Jerusalem will beallowed to pass through the "crossing." Following an attackon Israeli settlers on Thursday evening, 30 March 2006, inthe northern West Bank, IOF positioned at variouscheckpoints imposed additional restrictions on the movementof Palestinian civilians. IOF positioned at Za taracheckpoint, south of Nablus, have continued to preventresidents of Tulkarm from passing through the checkpoint. During the reported period, IOF positioned at variouscheckpoints around Nablus prevented Palestinians agedbetween 16 and 35 from passing through the checkpoint. During the reported period, IOF positioned at variouscheckpoints in the West Bank arrested 9 Palestiniancivilians, including two children.


Annexation Wall:IOF have continued to construct the Annexation Wall insidethe West Bank. During the reported period, IOF continued toconstruct a section of the Wall in the Dahiat al-Barid area,north of Jerusalem. By the completing the construction ofthis new section of the Wall, all entrances to Dahiatal-Barid area and al-Ram village will be closed. IOF alsodeclared that they would establish a barbed wire fencearound the al-Mawahel quarter of Beit Hanina village, northof Jerusalem. During the reported period, IOF resumed theconstruction of the separating fence around "Shavi Shomron"settlement. IOF also used force to disperse peacefuldemonstrations organized by Palestinian civilians andinternational and Israeli peace activists in protest to theconstruction of the Wall in Bal ein and Beit Siera villages,west of Ramallah. Six Palestinian civilians were wounded,and others suffered from tear gas inhalation. IOF alsoarrested 3 Israeli solidarity activists and an Australianone.


Illegal Settler Activities: Israeli settlers inbreach of international humanitarian law continue to residein the OPT and have launched a series of attacks againstPalestinian civilians and property. During the reportedperiod, two Palestinian civilians and a Swiss peace activistwere injured. The settlers also uprooted at least 60 olivetrees and killed 15 sheep in Nablus.

International Corporations: McDonald's linked to Amazon destruction - Greenpeace today exposed the role played by McDonald's in the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. As part of a new campaign to tackle the latest threat to the Amazon, Greenpeace has completed a year-long undercover investigation into the global trade in Amazon soya. The findings are today published in a new report, Eating up the Amazon (2). Using satellite images, aerial surveillance, previously unreleased government documents and on-the-ground monitoring, Greenpeace traced soya from criminal rainforest destruction to McDonald's restaurants and to supermarkets across Europe.
