U.S. Air Force Manages Client Software Globally With Symantec

Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announcedthat the U.S. Air Force has selected Symantec LiveState Client ManagementSuite and Symantec professional services consulting as key support elementsof the Air Force Standard Desktop Configuration (SDC), the service's globalclient device and software management program. Under the terms of afive-year agreement, the Air Force is utilizing Symantec's experts andtechnologies to centrally create, deploy, and manage software packages andconfiguration settings for hundreds of thousands of Air Force clientdevices located around the world. Program objectives of the Air Force SDCinclude enhanced vulnerability management and assured system uptime andavailability for end-users.


"Symantec's LiveState software delivers key capabilities and complementaryfunctions to our comprehensive technology and services team supporting theAir Force SDC," said Lee Stanford, program manager for the Air Force'sStandard Desktop Configuration. "Performing software deployments,maintenance, and upgrades for users on-demand while simultaneously leavingtheir devices available for use significantly lowers the SDC'senterprise-wide resource costs and complexity."

Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite is a lifecycle managementsolution allowing client devices to be successfully managed, controlled,and protected from acquisition to disposal. The suite features reliableand proven technologies, including Symantec Ghost imaging and pcAnywhere,allowing customers to remotely discover assets, configure and provisionclient devices, deploy critical patches, remediate disrupted operations,and securely retire clients. Secure disposal of decommissioned devices isenabled by GDisk, Symantec Ghost's disk-wiping function that conforms toU.S. Department of Defense (DOD) disk-wipe standards, including those setin DOD NISPROM (National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual),5220.22-M.


Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite also leverages industry-leadingpatch scanning technology from Shavlik Technologies and incorporatesaward-winning IT asset discovery and auditing technology from CentennialCorp.


Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite's open and extensiblearchitecture allows modular capabilities to be added as needed, includingsystem recovery. Interoperability with existing lifecycle managementprocesses and tools minimizes the total cost of owning and maintaininglarge groups of deployed devices.


Fulfilling the agreement's professional services component, Symantecexperts stationed at supporting Air Force facilities are assisting AirForce personnel with LiveState implementation and operation. Symantec'senterprise-wide LiveState software and services agreement with the AirForce was facilitated through the U.S. Department of Defense's (DOD)Enterprise Software Initiative (ESI), a joint project aimed at establishingenterprise-wide DOD software and information sharing practices.
