T-Com Secures Internet Access with Firewalls from Lucent Technologies13 March 2005
T-Com, the fixed line division of Deutsche Telekom AG, has awarded Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) a contract for Lucent's award-winning VPN Firewall solution to protect Internet login servers on its network.
Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will supply Brick® 350 and Brick® 150 firewalls. Lucent will incorporate this Bell Labs-developed technology into the edge of T-Com's network to provide advanced security services to protect the login servers used for Internet dial-up connections, as well as to allow highest availability of T-Com login systems.
The Lucent VPN Brick® firewalls can protect a critical area in T-Com's network, the "Authentification Servers". These perform user authentication and verification functions, which confirm whether the user trying to connect to the Internet - be it by DSL, ISDN, analog modem or Voice over IP - is a registered customer. The connection to the T-Com backbone is only set up after the customer"s identity and account has been authenticated. The servers and the firewalls that protect them represent the first line of defense in an important area of T-Com's network.
"The deployment at such a critical area is a sign of T-Com's confidence in the reliability, security and capabilities of our Lucent Firewall Brick," declared Holger Schmidt, Director, Global Account Deutsche Telekom Wireline for Lucent Technologies. "We intend to fulfill these expectations in the future as well, with our Bell Labs scientists and engineers continuing to deliver innovative security solutions."
The inherent security of the Lucent Brick is one way the solution meets T-Com"s requirements. In a network, the Lucent Brick units are Layer 2 devices monitoring Layer 3 ( IP ) traffic, and they do not have IP addresses. This makes the Lucent product intrinsically secure, as it is "invisible" to network attackers.
Though the Lucent VPN Firewall Brick functions like a stand-alone black box, they can be managed easily without costly network reconfigurations or on-site support. This is made possible by the Lucent Security Management Server ( LSMS ) that can manage thousands of VPN Firewall Brick units and IPSec Client users from one console. The software allows in-service updates, for example, and provides T-Com with detailed information about the state of the firewalls.
Lucent VPN Firewall Brick The Lucent VPN Firewall Brick® is a fast, intelligent protection system. It runs on the highly secure real-time operating system Inferno®. This was developed by the same Bell Labs team that created the UNIX® operating system. More information on the Lucent VPN Firewall Brick® is available at http://www.lucent.com/firewall .
