Symantec to Acquire Relicore11 February 2006
Symantec to Acquire Relicore Extends Symantec s DataCentre Management Capabilities Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC) today announced it has signed a definitive agreementto acquire Relicore, Inc., a leading provider of data centrechange and configuration management solutions. Relicore sflagship product, Relicore Clarity, is the industry s onlyconfiguration management solution capable of automaticallydiscovering, mapping and tracking changes to application andserver components in real time. The acquisition ofRelicore is a key step in Symantec s creation of anintegrated solution for standardised, simplified data centremanagement. The transaction is expected to close inmid-February 2006. "The application and server environmentin most enterprises is growing and changing so fast, it hasbecome dizzyingly complex," said Kris Hagerman, senior vicepresident of the Server and Storage Management Group,Symantec. "Meanwhile, due to 24x7 performance demands, cost pressure and internal and external compliancerequirements, it has never been more important for ITorganisations to understand what is in their data centres -- and control it. The combination of Relicore s unique,real-time configuration management capability withSymantec s existing server management and storage managementcapabilities will allow IT managers to fully understandtheir application and server environment, and activelymanage it." Relicore s Clarity product discovers allapplications running on managed servers, tracks keyconfiguration information, maps the dependencies of thoseservers and applications and keeps all of that informationup to date on a real-time basis. This allows customersto replace the time-consuming and error-prone process ofmanually collecting and maintaining asset inventories, andaccelerates troubleshooting efforts by helping IT managersidentify when a particular change to the server orapplication environment has created a problem. Thiscapability is crucial given that, according to IDC, 78percent of server downtime is due to infrastructure changes. In addition, customers apply Relicore s Clarity to moreeffectively and efficiently manage their compliance withregulatory requirements, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, bydiscovering and mapping the resources associated withfinancial reporting systems, and ensuring the policiesassociated with those systems are continuously enforced. "Relicore provides the only real-time discovery, mappingand change tracking technology in the industry," said VicNyman, president and CEO, Relicore. "We look forward tocombining our configuration management offering withSymantec s leading provisioning, availability andperformance management products to provide customers with anintegrated, powerful solution for data centremanagement." Configuration Management Complements andExtends Symantec s Current Offerings Adding Relicore sconfiguration management technology to Symantec s existingproducts will allow customers to gain greater visibility andcontrol over their data centre assets and improve theirefficiency and effectiveness in managing those assets. Customers will immediately benefit from a variety ofsolutions that combine Relicore s Clarity with otherSymantec offerings, allowing customers to: - Automateserver management through use of Relicore s configurationmanagement and Symantec s VERITAS OpForce serverprovisioning product. Customers can utilise OpForce toautomate server and application deployment and then applyRelicore s change tracking capabilities to ensure theintegrity of server configurations as well as maintaincompliance over time. - Improve application and databaseavailability through use of Relicore configurationmanagement and Symantec s VERITAS Cluster Server clusteringoffering. Relicore s change tracking capability will reducedowntime due to environmental changes while ensuring primaryand secondary nodes maintain identical profiles, reducing amajor source of cluster failures. - Resolve performanceproblems through use of Relicore configuration managementand Symantec i3 application performance management product. Together, these two real-time tools will enable ITorganisations to correlate performance degradations with theconfiguration changes that caused them, resulting in evenfaster resolution of performance problems. In addition tothese immediate areas of synergy, there are a variety ofother areas that offer promising opportunities for deeperintegration. For example, by leveraging Relicore stechnology along with its leadership position in host-basedstorage management, Symantec will allow customers not onlyto better understand their server and applicationenvironment, but also to better understand the storage thatis connected to those servers. Moreover, configurationmanagement is being viewed by many enterprises as one of thecritical -- and growing -- linkages between the domains ofsecurity and IT operations. If a company is to respond on atimely basis to protect its IT environment from securityvulnerabilities, the security and IT operations teams mustwork in tandem to establish policies for secureconfigurations of servers and applications -- and then ensurethat those policies are actually implemented and adhered to. Through the integration of Relicore technology withSymantec s security compliance offerings, companies willhave the ability to effectively bridge the worlds ofsecurity and IT operations to deliver a data centreoperation that is more secure, more reliable and moreavailable. While the synergy with other Symantec offeringsis significant, Relicore s Clarity also will continue to beoffered on a stand-alone basis as a leading solution forcustomers interested in integrating configuration managementtechnology with third-party software and IT processimprovement initiatives, including ITIL implementations, ITservice management software deployments and changemanagement and incident support process improvementprojects. Symantec plans to continue, and to expand,Relicore s partnerships with third-party software vendorssuch as those Relicore announced with IBM Tivoli, HPOpenView and Peregrine. Availability Relicore Claritywill be available as a stand-alone solution throughSymantec s sales organisation and channel partners in earlyApril 2006, assuming that the acquisition closes asscheduled.
