SurfControl Threat Experts Identify Malicious e-Greeting Spam

7 April 2006

SurfControl (LSE: SRF), the global leader in Internet content protection, today announced its Threat Experts have identified a new batch of malicious e-greeting spam targeting South America with potential for dangerous financial risk due to the nature of the Keylogging spyware associated with this attack. SurfControl's Threat Analysts have been tracking the spread of malicious code distributed through email greetings card for well over a year now. In fact back in June 2005 SurfControl predicted the increase and spread in activity of malicious e-greeting spam and now, 12 months down the line, this threat sees no sign of relenting. With the Easter holidays just round the corner Threat Experts also anticipate a flurry of activity of malicious e-greeting spam as malcode writers and spammers seek to exploit the religious festivities.

"A user's inquisitive nature can often be the weakest link in a company's fight against malware and employees are known to open the email and follow the links believing the spam to have originated from friends or family members," said Susan Larson, Vice President of SurfControl's Adaptive Threat Intelligence service.

SurfControl's Threat Analysis and Research department is uniquely positioned to provide ATI protection throughout the country-wide operation and time zone barriers where threats rapidly evolve. Around the clock exchange of information on new threat vectors allows SurfControl's Threat Experts to be at the forefront of Internet content protection. SurfControl has been adding the new spam signatures to the SurfControl Email Filter databases to stop fictitious e-greeting spam from reaching inquisitive users. Furthermore, any malicious applications are sampled and added to the SurfControl Threat Shield product and the origin of these applications have been added to the SurfControl Web Filter databases. By deploying all three products SurfControl's customers are well placed to have the best protection from these dangerous spam.
