Sputnik Extends Range of Managed Wi-Fi Networks with Dual-Radio Wireless Access Point

16 April 2005

Sputnik, a leading provider of Wi-Fi management products and services, today introduced the Sputnik AP 250, a high-powered, dual-radio wireless access point that extends the range of the company's distributed wireless networks serving hotels, multi-tenant dwellings, airports, campuses, and municipal wireless venues.

The new Sputnik AP 250 access point is preconfigured to work as a bridge repeater with Sputnik-powered access points to extend a Wi-Fi network for several miles. The ability to extend the range of a wireless network is highly valuable to Wireless ISPs who want to minimize the number of Internet backhaul connections required.

All Sputnik Wi-Fi networks use the award-winning Sputnik Control Center(TM) wireless network management software as an authentication gateway and network administration console.

"With this powerful and affordable equipment, a wireless service provider has an attractive option for public access municipal Wi-Fi deployments. A Sputnik-powered network relies on mature industry standards and is more cost-effective than today's mesh Wi-Fi designs. Sputnik Control Center wireless network management software means that even a large-scale municipal wireless network with thousands of users is very simple to deploy and grow," said David LaDuke, Sputnik founder and CEO.

The Sputnik AP 250 wireless access point features a sealed, ruggedized enclosure for operation in the harshest outdoor conditions. Industry-standard Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability allows the access point to be located where AC power is not available, further extending the options for indoor/outdoor hotspots.

The Sputnik AP 250 offers flexibility for configuring Wi-Fi hotspots to provide coverage in a variety of venues, from multi-tenant buildings to city parks. The access point includes two radios with up to 200 mWatt transmit output each. Each radio has separately adjustable power output, with its own channel, SSID and encryption settings. The Sputnik AP 250 works with a wide assortment of standard antennas--high-gain, directional, omnidirectional, or Yagi. Sputnik provides a selection of antennas certified for use with the Sputnik AP 250.

Award-Winning Sputnik Heritage

Sputnik Control Center software lets network administrators track usage by user and location, and capture "opt-in" marketing information about their wireless customers. Administrators can block usage of specific protocols such as peer-to-peer file swapping, and secure internal networks, making them available only to employees. In addition to monitoring real-time network status, administrators use the secure Web interface to configure access points remotely, create custom captive portal pages, set network policies, and generate reports.

Sputnik Control Center software runs on any Intel-based server in the solution provider's data center. SputnikNet(TM) and SputnikNet Premier(TM) are hosted versions available as Web-based applications.

Price and Delivery

The Sputnik AP 250 is available immediately at $399 per unit at www.sputnik.com. A Hotzone Kit consisting of a Sputnik AP 250, a Sputnik-Powered AP, and one Sputnik Control Center software license starts at $699.

A range of Sputnik-certified directional and omnidirectional antennas and PoE accessories are also available from Sputnik's online store. All Sputnik products come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
