SonicWALL Updates Popular Remote Management Software With Improved Performance, Management and UTM Capabilities

20 January 2006

SonicWALL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNWL), today announced major enhancements to its Global Management System (GMS) making the management of distributed security networks faster, simpler and more cost-effective for IT administrators and managed services providers. Updates to the widely-used management and reporting software include enhanced monitoring, forensics and management features, and the addition of Unified Threat Management (UTM) signature upload capabilities.

GMS version 2.9.4 incorporates threat signature upload capabilities, enabling IT administrators to upload SonicWALL's UTM protection -- incorporating dynamically updated anti-virus, anti-spyware and intrusion prevention -- to firewalls that are not connected to the Internet. "Although protecting the perimeter of the network is still a key security objective, the fact is that the majority of threats are generated from within the internal LAN," said Prasad Bevra, director of software engineering at SonicWALL. "SonicWALL's UTM capabilities are normally delivered through firewalls connected to the internet. GMS now allows IT administrators to maintain dynamically updated protection whether or not there is an external connection."

More than 50,000 SonicWALL appliances in distributed networks worldwide are currently managed using GMS. The software allows IT administrators to manage thousands of remote SonicWALL security appliances and Unified Threat Management (UTM) services from a single, central location. The largest network currently managed by GMS is run by Australian VAR OnQ on behalf of retail client BillExpress, and covers some 3,500 locations.

A popular solution for providing simple and flexible management solutions in retail networks, GMS is also a major enabler for SonicWALL's global Managed Security Services Program (MSSP). SonicWALL's MSSP partners are able to manage thousands of SonicWALL appliances on behalf of their customers as an outsourced network security service.

"The latest version of GMS offers further capabilities for managed services partners, for example, easy integration into the portals where their managed services customers access and view their own network logs," added Bevra. "The new version makes it easier for MSSPs to track their licenses and subscriptions from a single place, enabling channel partners to use the data as management, customer service and sales support tools."

Enhanced forensics, for example, the ability to identify the originating IP address of attacks on their network, are designed to help end-users meet compliance and regulatory requirements. This update also includes a new module enabling administrators to obtain real-time reports through SNMP statistics and use a single platform to monitor not only SonicWALL devices and the networks they protect in real time but also any SNMP capable network device. New navigation features allow users to find and set policies faster and schedule configuration tasks more intuitively and enable real-time alerting and improved reporting schedules.

Eligible Appliances

SonicWALL GMS 2.9.4 is available now on second- and third-generation SonicWALL Internet Security appliances running Firmware 6.1.2.0 or higher and fourth-generation appliances running SonicOS Standard 1.0 Wireless or higher, SonicOS Standard 2.0 or higher or SonicOS Enhanced 2.0 or higher.
