SonicWALL Keeps Users Secure in the Face of Microsoft Flaw

18 December 2005

SonicWALL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNWL), the global leader in Unified Threat Management (UTM) security appliances according to IDC*, today announced that their Internet threat prevention technology is actively protecting users against the latest "critical" vulnerabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer that can allow an attackers to execute malicious code on unsuspecting users' workstations. (*IDC Worldwide Tracker Report, September, 2005)
Microsoft defines a flaw as critical when the vulnerability could allow a damaging Internet threat to replicate without the user doing anything to the machine. The company identified the critical flaw in its December 13 security bulletin and is urging users to download and install the patch available at http://www.microsoft.com/security. "This vulnerability is especially malicious because it affects a core part of the Windows operating system, an area where more flexibility is given to the attacker," said Boris Yanovsky, vice president of software services at SonicWALL.
"We recommend running security appliances that can prevent an attacker's exploit before it has a chance enter the network," said Deepak Thadani, president of SysIntegrators, LLC. "Some prevention solutions work by identifying and segregating attacks after they have entered the network, which we don't believe is as effective in keeping internal computers secure."
The company's SonicAlert unit automatically provides new security signatures to subscribers as soon as vulnerabilities are identified, delivering zero day gateway anti-virus and intrusion prevention signatures to stop attacks and exploits. SonicWALL security appliance technology incorporates a real-time deep packet inspection architecture integrating high-speed gateway anti-virus, anti-spyware, intrusion prevention, anti-spam, anti-phishing, and content filtering for a single point of network security control.
