Silex Vice President Encourages Constant Entrepreneurial Mindset16 January 2005
Gary Bradt, vice president of silex technology america's biometric business division, spoke Thursday to Utah Valley Entrepreneurial Forum (UVEF) members about maintaining their entrepreneurial spirit during all stages of business growth. Whether starting a new venture, growing a small business or maintaining an established corporation, people must maintain constant and fearless entrepreneurship, according to Bradt. "Entrepreneurs tend to gravitate to what they like and do well, and normally avoid or procrastinate what they do not like or do not know," Bradt said. "In other words, they tend to work in shells. Companies of all sizes and ages must constantly pay attention to market factors and trends and adjust accordingly." Himself as an example of paying attention to market trends, Bradt joined silex technology america, a 30-year-old company specializing in print server technology, at a time when the concern for information security is at its height for corporations, government and consumers. silex has now introduced a line of biometric fingerprint scanners, providing access security by locking down buildings, networks, offices, laptops and printers. "The human fingerprint is the perfect lifetime ID to secure access to important information," Bradt said. "Although silex has been around for a long time, we are still exercising an entrepreneurial spirit by providing new solutions for the market based on arising needs."
Bradt also explained reasons companies often fail, including:
* Not knowing what to expect -- unaware of a need for change (hiring, finance, etc.)
* Inadequate planning
* Thinking difficult issues are "just part of growing pains" (personality conflicts, attitude problems)
* Thinking that what you have done in the past will work in the future
* Being unaware of how people perceive you
* Bad timing! Not paying attention to market factors
Bradt encouraged entrepreneurs to surround themselves with strong people, attorneys who are used to working with entrepreneurs and investors, and who handle intellectual property protection from the beginning; experts in HR, PR and marketing, and employees who will be evangelists for the company. "You have to surround yourself with the right team," Bradt said. "When you are starting a business, you have to have evangelists, people who believe in the company, live it, drink it and breathe it. If you don't have evangelists, you will not be successful." Curtis Morley, president of MediaRain, also addressed UVEF members about taking advantage of existing concerns and trends. MediaRain specializes in Flash technology and creates solutions for clients looking for dynamic Web capabilities. MediaRain has provided interactive solutions for multiple clients, including Novell, FranklinCovey and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The next UVEF luncheon will take place February 10 at 11:45 a.m. at the Provo Marriott. For more information about the UVEF, or to become a member, please visit http://www.uvef.net.
