Redemtech Puts the Lock on Data in Transit and Storage

11 January 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 9 -- Redemtech, a leading provider of Technology Change Management (TCM) services, today released Datasure Lock- IT(TM) 2.0, a unique security utility that quickly locks hard disks by encrypting the file system, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive data during transit or storage of data-bearing assets.

"A significant number of security breaches occur as a result of lost or stolen computers," said Robert Houghton, president of Redemtech. "Lock-IT allows organizations to close a gap in their security program by enabling fast, on-site data locking on assets being decommissioned or redeployed."

Over 200 million computers will be decommissioned this year and millions more idled or redeployed, representing a huge vulnerability if data is unsecured during the transition. In addition, laptop or device theft was the number one security problem reported in the 2005 Computer Security Institute/FBI Computer Security Survey. A study by the Ponemon Institute revealed that a security breach involving customer data costs an average of $14 million, with costs as high as $50 million in some cases.

Conventional onsite data security measures can be time consuming, expensive and require trained technicians. Lock-IT can be downloaded and installed in less than five minutes by a non-technical user and executes in just 30 seconds. It can also be configured as part of the system image, providing on-demand locking security throughout an asset's lifecycle. Multiple unlock options can be configured, including user-defined passwords and a Corporate Unlock Key.

Lock-IT is ideal for protecting assets in transit to Redemtech facilities or other service providers, for idled equipment in unsecured storage facilities or on desktops, during temporary moves and technology refresh projects and for other periods where assets are idle and encryption or erasure is impractical. Lock-IT has also been used by several organizations to deal with defective disk drives in service. Lock-IT's ability to boot from DOS allows data on defective drives to be quickly secured until the drives can be transported to a facility for certified erasure. One privacy-regulated organization was able to securely manage the replacement of more than 15,000 defective drives located in branch offices across the United States using Lock-IT.

The new release of Lock-IT, available immediately, includes more options for unlocking secured assets, more granular administrative control and support for Certified Data Security Reporting.

Redemtech's end-to-end data security process includes onsite data lock or erasure, chain-of-custody controls, automated data destruction and verification and security repository. Lock-IT integrates with Retrac(TM), Redemtech's Web-based business process automation system, for verification reporting through Redemtech's Certified Data Security Report, which helps monitor enterprise compliance with security standards by documenting the security status of assets entering and exiting Redemtech facilities.

Lock-IT works on any Windows(R)-based computer, including desktops and servers. Once initial options are configured, the software can be downloaded from the Redemtech Web site and distributed to end users via the Internet, email, floppy disk, CD, USB drive, system image or network command.
