Public Town Hall: Protecting Personal Information on the Internet

31 May 2006

The following is being issued by the Cyber Security Industry Alliance:

WHAT: A rash of high-profile data breaches over the past 15

months has compromised nearly 82 million personal records,

according to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. The impact

of publicized data breaches, along with the increase in

phishing e-mails, spyware and other online fraud is having

a real impact on how consumers and businesses approach the

digital world. In fact, a recent survey sponsored by the

Cyber Security Industry Alliance (CSIA) showed that only 44

percent of Americans feel their information is safe when

engaging in e-commerce and 50 percent avoid making

purchases online because they are afraid their financial

information will be stolen. So what should consumers

expect from government and business when it comes to

protecting their online information?

CSIA, in cooperation with the Georgia Tech Information

Security Center, Internet Security Systems Inc., the

Technology Association of Georgia and the GeorgiaLink

Public Affairs Group, will host a public town meeting in
