Panda Software Reports 'Classic' Viruses Dropped Dramatically in 2005

20 January 2006

According to data released by PandaLabs, less than one percent of the new threats detected in 2005 were viruses, whereas threats like Trojans and worms still had a significant presence compared to the previous year.

"Viruses -- threats that add their code to other executable files in order to carry out their malicious actions -- have reached rock bottom this year," explains Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs. "The motivation of virus writers is usually fame, whereas creators of Trojans and worms are inspired by profit."

Of the new threats detected by PandaLabs in 2005, 42 percent were Trojans, 26 percent were bots, 11 percent were backdoor Trojans, 8 percent were dialers, 6 percent were worms and 3 percent were types of adware and spyware. The activity of these threats registered by Panda ActiveScan is significantly different -- 44 percent of its detections were types of adware/spyware -- but the low presence of viruses remains.

"Trojans, phishing, spyware ... all of these can be used, in one way or another, for financial gain and that is why they persist," says Luis Corrons. "Similarly, much more sophisticated cybercrime, such as targeted attacks, are less quantifiable. Companies do not give enough attention to the risks that these types of threats pose to their interests."

About PandaLabs

Since 1990, its mission has been to analyze new threats as rapidly as possible to keep our clients safe. Several teams, each specialized in a specific type of malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, phishing, spam, etc), work 24/7 to provide global coverage. To achieve this, they also have the support of TruPrevent(TM) Technologies, which act as a global early-warning system made up of strategically distributed sensors to neutralize new threats and send them to PandaLabs for in-depth analysis. According to AV-Test.org, PandaLabs is currently the fastest laboratory in the industry in providing complete updates to users (more info at http://www.pandasoftware.com/pandalabs.asp).
