Novatix Releases Free Behavior-Based Consumer Security Software Cyberhawk

20 July 2006

Novatix Corporation, developers of leading edge zero-day security software, today announced the release of its new behavior-based consumer security software Cyberhawk. Cyberhawk provides comprehensive real-time protection against viruses, worms, trojans, hackers, rootkits, buffer overflows and certain types of spyware and adware, and is completely free to home users.

Behavior-based protection actively defends a PC by examining and monitoring the actual behavior of files, background tasks, and processes to block and prevent the dangerous actions of malware such as viruses, trojans or spyware. Cyberhawk's behavior-based approach improves on traditional signature-based antivirus and anti-spyware software because these programs offer strictly reactive protection. They can only protect you from a new threat after the threat has been discovered and analyzed, and after new signatures to detect the threat are developed, tested, and then released for download.

"Cyberhawk is designed to close the holes in a user's existing antivirus solution," says Novatix CEO Mike Kronenberg. "And those holes can be quite large, particularly when a user needs protection against the latest rapidly propagating malware. Our testing shows that 83% of the malware Cyberhawk catches would have been missed by at least one of the "Big 3" antivirus players: Symantec, McAfee or Trend Micro. But adding Cyberhawk as a second line of defense significantly improves the effectiveness of these traditional antivirus programs. For instance, we recently tested Symantec, McAfee or Trend with updated signatures as of July 18th 2006. None of them caught a recent variant of the Backdoor.BlackHole trojan. But Cyberhawk caught it immediately and shut it down before it could infect the system."

"Backdoor.BlackHole is a particularly nasty trojan," said Kurt Baumgartner, Chief Threat Officer at Novatix. He explains that the trojan steals passwords from an unsuspecting user and attempts to send them to two web servers -- one hosted in China, and the other hosted in Taiwan. "When run, it initially copies itself to the system and hides its files' presence on the drive using advanced rootkit technology. The rootkit techniques employed actually hide it from two of the most advanced rootkit detectors publicly available -- Sysinternal's Rootkit Revealer and IceSword. Users would have a very difficult time finding and removing this threat if it were allowed to install on a system. Only a behavior-based program like Cyberhawk can proactively block this and any similar threats before it becomes widely spread," he said.

In this first release, Cyberhawk's ActiveDefense technology shuts down the behaviors of viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, buffer overflows and certain types of spyware and adware. Later this summer Novatix plans to release an enhanced version of Cyberhawk that will offer even more comprehensive protection against adware and spyware.

Cyberhawk's key benefits include:

* Protects Users When Their Antivirus Cannot ~ Cyberhawk makes intelligent

choices to proactively shut down any activity or behavior that might

compromise the security of a PC. With this one program users are

protected against both known and unknown viruses, worms, trojans,

intruders, rootkits, spyware and other forms of malware.

* Easy to Use and Configure ~ Cyberhawk was designed with average,

non-technical users in mind. It is straightforward and provides clear

guidance so even novice users will not be intimidated when using the

software. Cyberhawk is fully configured out-of-the-box to provide the

most comprehensive protection available.

* Completely Free to Home Users ~ Novatix believes users should not have

to pay a lot of money to be safe online.

Cyberhawk is designed for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 operating systems. Home users can download Cyberhawk free from the Novatix Web site at http://www.novatix.com.
