Network Security Market Up 4%

31 August 2005

Worldwide network security appliance and software revenue continued its steady climb, rising 4% to $1 billion between 1Q05 and 2Q05, and is projected to grow 23% to $1.3 billion by 2Q06, according to Infonetics Research's Network Security Appliances and Software report. Annual revenue is projected to grow to $6.4 billion by 2008.

"Some vendors are starting to build integrated content security appliances (virus scanning, spam filtering, spyware/malware security, etc.) and are intentionally leaving out VPN and firewall functionality, so these products can act as a supplement to existing embedded VPN/firewall products," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "We'll keep a close eye on this segment as it emerges."

2Q05 Highlights
-- Cisco leads the network security appliance and software market with 34%
of worldwide revenue, Check Point is second with 10%, and Juniper is third
with 8%
-- Enterasys, ISS, McAfee, Nokia, Nortel, SonicWALL, and Symantec are
strong second-tier players for revenue market share (each with between 1% and
6% of the total market)
-- VPN and firewall appliances and software make up 78% of total revenue,
IDS/IPS make up 14%, and gateway anti-virus makes up 8%
-- Infonetics' 2Q05 revenue forecast was within 1% of actual revenue

Network Security Appliances and Software tracks VPN and firewall appliances in six price-banded categories, hardware secure routers, SSL VPN gateways, VPN and firewall software, host- and network-based IDS/IPS products, and gateway anti-virus products.
