Motorola Extends MediaCipher(R) Content Security System to Support IP Video

21 June 2006

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that the widely-deployed Motorola MediaCipher(R) Content Security System can be extended to protect IP-based video delivered over a DOCSIS(R)- based network. The Motorola MediaCipher IP Content Security System offers cable service providers a seamless migration path to IP video delivery while maintaining the same level of uncompromised content protection they have come to expect from the Motorola security solutions already deployed in their networks.

The announcement was made at the 2006 Cable-Tec Expo (21-23 June, Colorado Convention Center, Denver), where Motorola is demonstrating its technology innovations for the "Moto Me" at Stand #176. Members of the media can also learn more about Motorola at SCTE by visiting http://www.motorola.com/scte .

As cable customer demand grows for new, broadband connected devices in and around the home, having a secure framework for handling all forms of digital content becomes increasingly important. Motorola MediaCipher IP uses a common infrastructure with Motorola's traditional cable security system, so digital set-tops on a conventional network, IP-set-tops on a "switched" video network, and IP devices on a DOCSIS(R)-based network can all be managed through a single control platform.

Additionally, Motorola MediaCipher IP technology is compatible with the well-established open software interfaces that are currently deployed in electronic program guides, video-on-demand (VOD) solutions, and interactive applications. This means that service providers can offer a common navigation for both traditional cable programming and newer, IP-based content as the new IP network architecture and services are introduced.

"Motorola is extending its trusted MediaCipher content protection system to the IP-based architecture of the next-generation network. Now, cable service providers can securely deliver digital content to IP devices that connect to their network using the same Motorola rights management system they have relied upon for years," said John Burke, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager, connected home digital video solutions. "Motorola's investment in MediaCipher IP technology can give operators a flexible path to launch new, bandwidth-efficient services."

Motorola MediaCipher IP is part of the company's Broadscape(TM) portfolio of next-generation network solutions. As the cable network evolves to an environment of open standards and interoperability among technologies from multiple vendors, Motorola Broadscape solutions offer reliable, open, best-in- class Motorola broadband technology at every point along the end-to-end network path.

Motorola Broadscape solutions for IP Video include industry-leading MPEG-4 based high-definition video encoders; IP-based set-tops; an open, switched digital video architecture for hybrid-fiber coaxial (HFC) networks; and a streamlined approach for reducing the complexity and cost of introducing IP video into a cable network by routing video directly from a server to an edge QAM without the need for additional cable modem termination system (CMTS) capacity.
