Most Internet Users Don't Know Their Computers Are Infected With Viruses and Spyware15 February 2006
Front Porch, Inc., the leading developer of online user communications technologies for network providers, announced the launch of its PorchLight Security Messaging. Most users don't know when their computers are infected with viruses, worms or spyware. Even sophisticated users with anti-virus and anti-spyware software on their computers are often infected. A recent AOL/NCSA Online Safety Study showed that 92% of infected users surveyed were not aware that spyware was on their machines. Infected users pass viruses and worms to their co-workers, friends and family, slowing the network and ruining their Internet experience. Until now, network providers were unable to easily notify users when they detected problems on their computers. With the launching of Front Porch's PorchLight Security Messaging at DEMO 2006, network providers can now automatically notify infected users of security threats by sending a message detailing the specific virus, worm or spyware as well as clean up instructions directly to the users of infected machines. "We asked everyone at DEMO 2006, 'If your computer was infected with a virus, worm or spyware, would you want to know about it?'" said Carl Daly, Director of Sales at Front Porch. "DEMO attendees included business and security executives, partners with venture capitalist firms, university professors and editors and reporters of leading newspapers and magazines. They loved the idea of their network service provider automatically notifying them when the network detected security threats on their machines. Service providers liked the ability to clean up their networks while also reducing costs and improving customer service when these threats occur." PorchLight Security Messaging automatically notifies users when they are infected with security threats such as viruses, worms, spyware, Trojans, and zombies, or when they attempt to surf to fraudulent phishing sites. The PorchLight extends the capabilities of Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems to bridge the gap between detection and notification by automatically sending warnings to infected users' browsers.
