Microsoft releases new security patches

U.S. software giant Microsoft has released three software updates to fix security holes in its Windows operating system.

The so-called patches, which are available at windowsupdate.microsoft.com, include one that can affect computers equipped with the Service Pack 2 security upgrade that Microsoft released five months ago, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The most urgent security hole involves a glitch in the way Windows handles requests for "HTML help," a function that uses Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser to display instructions for using a variety of computer programs. The help-file flaw is present in nearly all versions of Windows, including computers running Windows XP that also have the Service Pack 2 security upgrade installed.

The company also released the "malicious software removal tool" to search and remove Windows PCs for such prevalent worms as Blaster, Sasser, MyDoom, Gaobot and Nachi.
