McAfee IntruShield Network IPS V 3.1 Receives Updated Common Criteria Certification27 April 2006
McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the global leader in Intrusion Prevention and Security Risk Management, today announced that McAfee(R) IntruShield(R) network IPS earned the Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 3 certification for its latest v 3.1 product release. McAfee's IntruShield network IPS appliance is the first intrusion prevention product to be certified as EAL 3 under the Common Criteria Certification, recognized in 20 countries and critical for U.S. federal, state and local government agencies implementing IT solutions. The McAfee(R) IntruShield(R) Intrusion Prevention product line provides government customers with proactive, real-time protection against zero-day, DoS and encrypted attacks as well as threats like spyware, malware, botnets, and threats that could be delivered through P2P and Skype. McAfee IntruShield network IPS appliances integrate patented detection techniques, centralized management, unrivaled proactive protection, and flexible deployment in addition to the industry's highest Gigabit port density appliances for enterprises, small and mid-size businesses, and government organizations. As validated by its recent Common Criteria evaluation, IntruShield's ASIC-based architecture can withstand rigorous third-party testing well beyond the qualifications of its competitors. "IntruShield's extensive certification and advanced capabilities enable organizations to confidently deploy the most accurate, scalable, and comprehensive real-time attack prevention in the industry," commented John Vecchi, Group Product Marketing Manager at McAfee. "Based on benchmarks with our federal customers, we have found that the IntruShield appliance meets the needs of federal customers, while also taking into account the concerns of the American taxpayer by providing a cost-effective solution to protect assets," said Dan Zubairi, an expert Security Contractor for the U.S. Commerce Department. Security assurance requirements specify that EAL 3 is intended for environments where the risks and consequences of data disclosure and loss of data integrity are moderate. Furthermore, EAL 3 requires additional integrity controls to ensure that data is not modified. A Certificate Issuing and Management Component (CIMC) meeting Security Level 3 must include mechanisms to protect against attacks by parties with physical access to the components as well as additional mechanisms to ensure that the CIMC is functioning securely. An EAL 3 evaluation provides an analysis supported by "gray box" testing, selective independent confirmation of the developer test results, and evidence of a developer's search for obvious vulnerabilities. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency (NSA) have established a program under the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) to evaluate IT product conformance to international standards. The program, officially known as the NIAP Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS), is a partnership between public and private sectors. The program is being implemented to help government agencies select commercial, off-the-shelf information technology products that meet their security requirements. It also helps manufacturers of such products gain acceptance in the global government marketplace.
