McAfee, Inc. Messaging and Web Security Appliances Deliver E-Mail Privacy at the Click of a Mouse

13 June 2006

McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the global leader in Intrusion Prevention and Security Risk Management, today announced enhancements to the McAfee(R) Secure Messaging Gateway and McAfee Secure Internet Gateway appliances. New easy to deploy features include e-mail regulatory compliance and encryption as well as enhanced anti-spam capabilities.

"McAfee's e-mail compliance module ensures that our clients comply with any privacy regulations by allowing them to intelligently select e-mails containing personal and sensitive information," said Simon Earl, network security consultant at Dee-IT. "All we have to do when installing an appliance is to click a check-box to turn on the scanning function and the module is instantly deployed."

The McAfee e-mail compliance module helps organizations comply with privacy and security regulations such as HIPAA, GLBA and Sarbanes-Oxley. The module is powered by the PostX HIPAA and Privacy Lexicons, which have earned the exclusive endorsement of the American Hospital Association. The e-mail compliance module scans e-mail headers, body and attachments for a wide variety of personal information and/or financial information such as drivers' license number, social security number, credit card numbers and bank account data. Rather than simply looking for messages containing these terms, the e-mail compliance module intelligently selects only those messages which contain a combination of personal information.

Once it has been determined that a message contains private information, the McAfee appliance takes appropriate actions such as blocking the message or sending the message to a third party encryption product for secure delivery. Many regulations specify that personal, financial and corporate information must be transmitted in a secure or encrypted form. The e-mail compliance module integrates with encryption solutions from a wide variety of vendors in order to re-route messages that contain protected information.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is another encryption option that is a built into the McAfee Secure Messaging Gateway and McAfee Secure Internet Gateway appliances. TLS utilizes an industry standard version of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to ensure message privacy between two communicating organizations.

In addition to scanning for sensitive data, an IP reputation filter was added to McAfee's award-winning anti-spam application. McAfee appliances have received Checkmark PREMIUM Anti-Spam Certification for accurately detecting 97 percent of spam. With the new IP reputation filer, that rate is increased even further. McAfee's IP reputation filter is powered by the Postini Threat Identification Network (PTIN)(TM), a real-time source of information about malicious computers that have recently launched email attacks. When the McAfee anti-spam module sees that a message has come from an IP address with a "bad reputation," the appliance can immediately reject the message. This results in less spam and greater efficiency enabling the appliance to handle approximately 25 percent more traffic.

"Organizations of all types and sizes are facing the issue of how to ensure the privacy and secure transmission of personal and sensitive customer data," said Vimal Solanki, senior director of product marketing at McAfee, Inc. "The McAfee gateway appliances give customers an easy solution for protecting that data and complying with e-mail privacy regulations."
