Grisoft’s AVG Anti-Virus 7.1 Adds Full Windows x64 Support and New Features to Detect and Remove Potentially Unwanted Programs.21 October 2005
Grisoft, a market leader in anti-virus software solutions announced the release of AVG Anti-Virus 7.1 on October 20th, which Authorized Distributor Walling Data Systems (http://www.avg-antivirus.net) is touting as one of the strongest and most comprehensive anti-virus products available on the market today for detecting and removing viruses as well as other potentially unwanted programs.
Although this new release contains several product enhancements, the two most significant changes are its ability to go beyond virus detection and full Windows x64 support. This new release is designed to detect and remove a class of threats that Grisoft is defining as potentially unwanted applications. These programs are typically classified as spyware and adware, although Grisoft will only be detecting higher risk threats in this class.
“Although AVG Anti-Virus 7.1 is not an anti-spyware application, it does have the ability to detect and remove a large percentage of programs that would be categorized as high risk spyware.” said Luke Walling, President of Walling Data Systems and US Distributor of the product.
The biggest distinction between adware-spyware and viruses is the intent of the program. Viruses are defined as malicious programs that are specifically designed to cause harm to the host’s computer, where spyware and adware are not typically classified as direct attacks or malicious code, but as “additional security risks”.
Spyware programs are defined as stand-alone applications designed to capture user information and Internet usage patterns for the purpose of relaying this information back to a third party without the user’s knowledge or consent. In some cases, commercial spyware programs are used for legitimate purposes such as monitoring employee Internet usage or for parents to prevent their children from accessing inappropriate websites. However, unscrupulous individuals and companies frequently use less savory spyware programs to gather login details, passwords, key strokes, bank account numbers and other financial information for the purpose of theft and identity fraud.
Adware is classified as programs that are used to display advertisements on the user’s monitor with their knowledge or consent. In most cases, these ads appear as pop-up windows. Although adware is not considered a direct threat, it can compromise the confidentiality and integrity of data on a computer system by tracking and compiling a profile of the user’s Internet usage patters. It can also diminish the speed and performance of a computer by using up excessive bandwidth, and modify the user’s settings without the user’s knowledge or consent.
Anti-spyware application bundles with AVG Anti-Virus 7.1, as well as all AVG Anti-Virus standalone products are available at http://www.avg-antivirus.net.
AVG Anti-Virus 7.1 is also one of the first anti-virus applications to provide full support for Windows x64, it is an integral part of all Professional versions of the AVG product.
The upgrade to AVG Anti-Virus 7.1 will be delivered to existing users of AVG Anti-Virus Professional Editions as a recommended update beginning October 20th.
As always, Grisoft’s AVG Anti-Virus software costs about 1/3 less than equivalent anti-virus software products and includes double the standard license period as well, 2 full years instead of just 1. It also utilizes very little system resources and finds and cleans viruses that many other anti-virus programs miss entirely making it the logical choice for home users seeking a high performance, non-intrusive anti-virus solution as well as an enterprise IT administrator seeking a solution to protect thousands of workstations and servers.
“I lost trust in the other anti-virus software I was using because it was not filtering viruses properly,” says Mike Henson, President of A+Computer Repair a reseller in Chesapeake,VA.“With AVG, you get bullet-proof virus protection without the problems or the high cost; it’s really a no-brainer,”
