Fiberlink Partners with Webroot to Protect Mobile Workers from Spyware Threats11 May 2005
Fiberlink Communications Corp. and Webroot Software jointly announced plans to roll out the industry's first combination of anti-spyware and mobile access software delivered as a service to mobile workers. The joint effort combines Spy Sweeper(TM), Webroot's award-winning anti-spyware solution, with Fiberlink's Extend360(TM) mobile access software, and protects end-users from malicious spyware when they connect to the corporate network from hotel rooms, airports and other public networks that are beyond the reach of corporate IT security systems. While many corporations employ firewalls, anti-virus, intrusion detection systems and other network-based security services to protect employees, these defenses are not effective against spyware. Mobile workers are at particular risk as fewer corporations deploy desktop level security defenses beyond anti-virus. As a result, when employees connect from the road they are susceptible to malicious spyware programs that are spread via the Internet.
Fiberlink's Extend360 software offers several key benefits to IT managers looking to defend against the surging spyware threat. As the first point of contact for mobile workers who want to access e-mail, corporate databases and other online resources, Extend360 is the gateway to the corporate network. Extend360 also features a portfolio of vulnerability management services that allow IT departments to secure and maintain strict control over mobile devices even while they connect from outside the network perimeter. Webroot Spy Sweeper, integrated with Extend360, takes full advantage of these benefits to automatically protect any mobile device before, during and after an employee accesses corporate resources from uncontrolled public networks.
"Fiberlink delivers mobile access software that makes it easy for mobile workers to be productive anytime, anywhere -- but we recognize that if spyware infects an executive's machine, their work will absolutely grind to a halt," said Fiberlink President Ed McCrossen. "Fiberlink is in a unique position to take the lead in our industry in guarding mobile workers against spyware, and today we're thrilled to partner with Webroot to provide this service."
C. David Moll, chief executive officer of Webroot Software stated, "We are excited about this new partnership with Fiberlink and are committed to delivering anti-spyware software to their rapidly growing list of enterprise customers. Our research indicates that approximately 9 out of 10 Internet-connected PCs are infected with spyware and adware -- and we commend Fiberlink for recognizing the need to protect their customers' mobile and remote workers from the barrage of unwanted programs that threaten their enterprise networks."
