eSoft Unveils Breakthrough in SMB Network Security: the Distributed Intelligence Architecture(TM)

23 April 2006

eSoft, Inc., a leading vendor of integrated Internet security and content management solutions, announced today the availability of the Distributed Intelligence Architecture(TM) (DIA) on all eSoft gateways. DIA is a powerful new technology that adds higher levels of security intelligence, more powerful and detailed reporting, as well as ultra-rapid security updates to eSoft customers.

Until now, SMB network managers have competed on an uneven playing field in terms of network thereat defense. Where hackers and malware authors have become expert at collaboration and leveraging 'strength in numbers,' the network IT manager still operates as a small, isolated island. By harnessing the power of eSoft's installed customer base on an opt-in basis to create a collaborative, global threat prevention network, small and medium size companies now have had the power, tools and scale to combat the ever-increasingly sophisticated and coordinated malware attacks.

DIA leverages eSoft's patented SoftPak Director(TM) (SPD) security infrastructure to create a dynamic, two-way communication channel between the appliances and the SPD. Three primary benefits of DIA are:

1. Each security appliance receives customized reports and mapping

features that summarize threat activity and provide yellow/red flags,

as well as protection suggestions particular to that appliance and

network,

2. Security appliances are now able to accept signature updates when

needed, as opposed to when scheduled, without introducing new security

risks,

3. By leveraging current information from all participating DIA

appliances and conducting real-time heuristic and anomaly detection,

more effective, real-time security signatures can be developed and

deployed.

According to Jeff Wilson, Principal Analyst at Infonetics Research, "eSoft is definitely on the right track with DIA. IT managers at smaller companies have not had the ability collaborate in an effort to strengthen their security posture, while at the same time hackers and malware generators have collaborated to amplify the effects of their exploits. DIA provides a critical framework for IT managers to leverage the 'power of the network', and strengthen their individual security schemas as a result."

DIA is an optional, free service offered by eSoft. By collecting limited information from an appliance, customers will experience the full benefits of the system. All information is completely anonymized by the SPD once it is collected. Customers that do to not participate in DIA will still benefit from new signatures and intelligence derived from the system but will not have access to automatic push updates, automatic security reports, or rich-media features such as ThreatMap, which provides real-time analysis of threats mashed with Google(R) mapping capability for a bird's eye view of threat origination and severity.

"The fundamental method of how security intelligence is derived and distributed has changed little in the past decade," said Scott Lukes, eSoft's Vice President of Marketing and Product Management. "Customers participating in eSoft DIA are a part of the most advanced distributed security architecture in the industry, and will benefit from the highest level of security possible. DIA features such as the 'virtual-push' mechanism eliminate worries about whether or not a customer has the most current signatures-with DIA, it's impossible not to have the latest information. In addition to the most up-to-date protection, the reports generated through DIA provide the information an IT manager needs to continually improve their infrastructure and security mechanisms."

Availability

DIA is available immediately on all eSoft products, including those already deployed in the field. Customers must opt to participate in DIA. More information is available at http://www.esoft.com/products/dia.cfm.
