Dell Delivers Next Generation Latitude Notebook Computers4 February 2005
The additions are highlighted by the Latitude D410, an ultraportable system that weighs under 4 pounds2 and can deliver nearly all-day computing3 on a single battery charge when configured with an optional extended-life battery. Also available today are the thin and light Latitude D610 and the high-performance Latitude D810. New technology and enhancements found across all three systems include: New Intel® Pentium® M processors with speeds up to 2.13GHz, a 533-MHz front-side bus and 2MB L2 cache; PCI Express-a new, industry-standard bus architecture that delivers powerful graphics, high performance memory and fast connections to peripherals like hard drives and DVD/CD burners; More robust Tri-Metal® chassis and magnesium alloy LCD covers that increase durability; Stiffer, sealed keyboards that provide better feel while protecting against spills; Sturdier hinges built to last through Dell's test of 20,000 open/close cycles; One-glance dashboard with separate Wi-Fi® , Bluetooth® indicators; Trusted Platform Module ( TPM ) security technology and integrated Smart Card readers help ensure only authorized systems access network data and resources; Additional USB ports located for easier access; Repositioned Wi-Fi antennas for improved wireless performance; Optional Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate ( EDR ) for fast transfer of large files and better multi-device connections.
The new notebooks are compatible with existing Latitude D-Family docks and accessories to preserve customers' investments in upgrades and peripherals.
"These Latitude notebooks reflect Dell's unique ability to incorporate direct customer feedback into every product. We have combined powerful new technologies such as PCI Express and DDR2 memory with outstanding performance, usability and reliability that our customers demand," said Alex Gruzen, senior vice president of Dell's Product Group. "We continue to listen to our customers to build and deliver the best technology and value."
Taking Security Seriously
As more computer users transition to notebooks and access networks from remote locations and public wireless networks, user and system security have become a top priority. These new Latitude D-Family systems now include two industry-standard security technologies: smart card readers and Trusted Platform Module ( TPM 1.1 ). Smart cards, combining both physical and password authentication, are the most cost-effective two-factor authentication solution to help ensure only authorized users are accessing systems and data. Dell has been leading the market in integrating this technology.
TPM is integrated into the systems' hardware and can provide two facets of system security: platform authentication and file encryption on the local drive. TPM helps ensure authorized systems are accessing network resources and that the files stored on a specific system are "locked" to that system. More information about smart cards, TPM and Dell's security products and solutions can be found at www.dell.com/security.
