Computer Viruses, Hackers and Spyware

With the increasing number of virus, hacker and spyware attacks every year, you would be surprised that many people still have not installed an effective antivirus, antispyware and personal firewall in their computers. Some people are confused of the nature of these security risks. They fail to understand why a firewall or a spyware removal tool is needed if they already have an antivirus software installed. Some people had some sort of security programs pre-installed when they purchased their desktops but they never bother to update their programs. Others may question why they need to buy the full version of security programs when there are so many free downloads available.

Computer viruses, hackers and spyware are different security problems. They can cause mild to severe damage to your computer, including system crash, loss or corruption of files, banking and identity theft. Each of them requires a dedicated security program for its own purpose. For example, an antivirus program detects computer viruses, but it cannot detect most of the spyware programs which are commonly bundled with free downloads, nor can it block hacker attacks. Likewise, a personal firewall cannot protect you from viruses and spyware. You need to install each of these programs individually or an all-in-one security suite for full protection.

The number of new viruses and spyware is increasing at enormous speed, these programs are getting more malicious than before. They cannot be detected with an outdated database. Therefore, even if you have antivirus and antispyware installed in your computer, you should update your programs routinely to protect yourself from these new security threats.

Finally, you should also choose the security programs carefully. It is prudent to research the software publisher first before downloading their products or running their free scans. There are many reports that some free downloads have installed hidden applications ( e.g. spyware or adware ) to the computer whereas others use outdated database for scanning. Using these programs may damage your system, create security holes and give you a false sense of security. Buy only from trusted, reputable software publishers such as Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Zone Labs, etc. It will save you a lot of time and headache in the long run.
