Commwarrior Mobile Phone Virus Arrives in the UK

28 June 2005

On the 27 of June www.Mobilephonevirus.com received a cry for help from mobile phone user Kathryn Wilson of Essex. Kathryn had recently returned from a summer holiday cruising around the Mediterranean. Whilst on the ship her phone started to receive constant prompts to accept a file from an anonymous phone. After declining to accept the file all morning she eventually accepted it. Her phone then displayed the message installing Commwarrior.

On retuning home Kathryn started to notice that the credit on her Nokia 6600 was being used up very quickly. She also noticed that her phone seemed to be constantly trying to send messages. On checking her sent items list she discovered that her phone had been sending MMS messages to all the people in her phone book. Commwarrior had struck.

Commwarrior works by trying to send itself by Bluetooth to any phone in the vicinity. The files that Comwarrior sends are named with random file names, so that users cannot be warned to avoid files with any given name. In addition of spreading over Bluetooth the Commwarrior will also read the users local address book for phone numbers, and start sending MMS messages containing the Commwarrior file.

Kathryn said “I knew something was wrong when my friends started to ask me what the file was that I had sent to them. I didn’t even know I had sent anything to them.” She added, "now some of my mates have been infected and they can’t seem to stop their phones from sending it on to their contacts. It’s a nightmare!”

Mobilephonevirus.com managed to point Kathryn in the direction of an anti virus tool that will remove the commwarrior virus. Founder Sam Blakeman said, “When I spoke to Kathryn it became evident that this was the first confirmed case of commwarrior in the UK. I quickly got in touch and told her how to remove the virus. My only concern is that Kathryn manages to get this information out to her other friends so we can stop commwarrior before it spreads.”

He Added, Mobilephonevirus.com offers a free alert service to inform people of any virus outbreaks and how to remove them if they are infected. We hope that in providing this service we can reduce the problems that people like Kathryn suffered.
