Colorado Technical University Unveils Bachelor of Computer Networking and Security

14 June 2005

To protect individuals, Corporate America and our nation's security from a growing threat of devastating cyber attacks, Colorado Technical University on Monday unveiled a new degree program -- the Bachelor of Science in Computer Networking and Security.

And Colorado Technical University, which is based in Colorado Springs, CO, and features campuses in Colorado, Missouri and South Dakota, has a partner in this and many of its career-based degrees: the ISSA, the Information Systems Security Association.

"Colorado Technical University is ISSA's educational institution of choice," said George Proeller, president of the Colorado Springs Chapter of ISSA.

"One of the reasons CTU has been honored with ISSA's Organization of the Year title is because CTU consistently produces relevant degree programs that meet the needs of our industry, and this is just one more example."

As many as 59 percent of computer security professionals recently surveyed believe that a major cyber attack is likely within the next 12 months, according to a national report co-sponsored by the ISSA. Just a few examples: This year the industry giant Citigroup was hacked and 3.9 million customers' data was stolen. Lexis/Nevis recently reported than 310,000 consumers' data is missing. And criminals' new scam is a form of extortion, trading individuals' secrets for money.

And that's just the tip of the cyber iceberg.

Estimates of overall financial loss in the United States from a variety of types of cyber crime start at $10 billion according to the Computer Security Institute.

Key components in the new BSCNS degree include:

Computing/Information Technology courses such as programming, architecture and operating systems
Computer networking courses
Criminal justice courses including criminal law
Computer Security courses, featuring computer forensics and a specialized "hacking" lab to teach students how to thwart cyber attacks in their native environment
