Book Written in Just 10 Days Offers First Published Insider Account of New Orleans Pre- and Post-Katrina11 October 2005
A book written in just ten days by a respected African-American columnist offers the first published insider account of New Orleans pre- and post-Katrina.
“Katrina and the Lost City of New Orleans” ($19.95), written by Rod Amis, a seasoned writer and columnist, takes readers back into the bowels of New Orleans. It also heads a wave of high-quality “instant books”, published within weeks of the New Orleans disaster -- all made possible by the latest print-on-demand technology, available through Lulu (www.lulu.com).
These "instant books" were created to support relief agencies in helping hurricane victims. Two others are “The Webcomic Hurricane Relief Book” and “Beyond the Storm: Shadows of the Big Easy”, which revives the city in its decadent glory.
“The speed at which these books became available to the public is truly remarkable,” said Bob Young, CEO, Lulu. “This is yet another aspect of the digital revolution, as words and technology merge to create “insta-books,” books that, incidentally, can help provide relief to the stricken areas of New Orleans.”
New Orleans, as Rod Amis knew it during his years as a Ninth Ward resident, will never exist again. But the way his new book describes the “city of love, lust, death and sex,” in a swaggering, gonzo style, lets the reader smell, feel, and taste the city that was.
Amis is donating part of the book’s proceeds to the New Orleans Hospitality Relief Fund, which benefits displaced service industry workers.
"The Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon Book" ($11.95), meanwhile, is the result of a two-day webathon sponsored and published by Blank Label Comics – http://www.webcomictelethon.com/ – which raised nearly $30,000. All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross.
"Beyond the Storm: Shadows of the Big Easy" ($10.00), published by Dave Wendt, is a diverse collection of stories, essays and art submitted from around the world and capture the essence of the city that was. All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross.
”I asked the contributors to take us to their vision of the Big Easy, and that's what they've done”, explains the book’s introduction. And remember -- we have traveled beyond the storm together -- and together we can re-build Big Easy so it can continue to cast its bright light on future generations."
As evidenced by these publications, the dual tragedies of Katrina and Rita can bring something positive back to New Orleans. With help from these and a number of other titles spun up in the wake of Katrina, it’s easy to show your support for the city -- all on one page http://www.lulu.com/neworleans.
